Kaī Muraoka was born in Tokyo and raised in a household marked by emotional rigidity and control. His mother was highly critical, and his stepfather enforced an atmosphere of strict precision that left little room for personal expression. His biological father was largely absent throughout his childhood. Kaī’s early home life was defined by tension and restraint, shaping his tendency to withdraw and observe rather than confront. His closest familial connection was with his younger step-sister, Mitsuki Mori-Muraoka, whose presence became both a source of comfort and responsibility.

At the age of sixteen, Kaī left home and lived independently in Tokyo for a brief period. During this time, he experienced housing instability and relied on temporary accommodations while sustaining himself through short-term work. Though physically separated from his family, he remained emotionally tethered to Mitsuki. After learning that she had relocated to the coastal town of Karakura, Kaī followed soon after, seeking both stability and distance from his past.

Karakura proved to be a turning point. Kaī established himself quietly within the community, initially working as a gift shop cashier, a position that provided consistent income and limited social pressure. He later secured work as a librarian, where the structured calm of the environment suited him. Alongside his employment, Kaī began writing in earnest, producing personal and fictional works that drew heavily from themes of identity, endurance, and self-discovery. Over time, writing became his primary form of self-expression and the foundation of his career as an author.

At twenty-one years old, Kaī realised that he was transgender. This understanding marked a significant shift in his self-perception and personal trajectory. He adopted the name Kaī, a name he associated with the ocean and personal continuity. He began socially transitioning, purchasing clothing through online retailers to maintain privacy and autonomy. As his presentation aligned more closely with his identity, he reported a growing sense of stability and confidence.

Medical transition presented logistical challenges. Local medical facilities in Karakura did not provide hormone replacement therapy, requiring Kaī to travel to Tokyo every three months for treatment. Despite the emotional difficulty of returning to a city tied to past trauma, he maintained this routine as a necessary step in his transition.

Kaī dyed his hair fiery red, a deliberate and visible marker of self-assertion. The change coincided with an increase in confidence in both his personal and professional life. While traces of his upbringing continued to affect him, they no longer defined his sense of self.
Kaī maintains a reserved but steady presence in Karakura.
