[!] Some music to accompany your reading?
Onesung. A calamity of an entity that spreads corruption, chaos, and catastrophe in this community.
Hold your loved ones close, and keep an eye out. These men and women are a danger to our society.

~Dr Katsuhito T’sien Saiky-Akihito

Onesung

A term? A name? Something that the passing observer only sees a mention of in the letter of a ranting judicial officer, the writings of a deceased person, and in court transcripts.

Said to be a spiritual, but also criminal enterprise. What exactly are the lofty goals of this group? How many members do they have (if any?) How do we know any of this is even real?

Even those who speak out against the so-called ‘calamity of an entity’ seem to have a hard time articulating what exactly it even is, or what its members believe.

Few really know, as it is not exactly the choice people would immediately have come to mind, should they wish to engage in organized criminal activity that involves delinquency, gang conflict involving turf, street-level crimes, or street racing. For that, they’d likely turn elsewhere in Karakura.

Largely unknown to most within Karakura, Onesung operates with a desire to excel/specialize in intelligence gathering, psychological operations, research efforts, blackmail, lawfare, and coordinated harassment campaigns. Ritual activity and spiritual practice are also crucial, completely central to the group's identity and activities. Perhaps the most curious aspect of the group is that, compared to the gangs and criminal enterprises in Karakura that scam and victimize the public... Onesung, by contrast, actively interacts with the public, albeit through completely legal means. Most of the time...

"So… what is the group all about?"

[!]
THE FOLLOWING SUPERFICIAL INFORMATION RELATING TO THE GROUP MAY NOT BE TAKEN ICly FROM THIS THREAD, AND MUST BE DISCOVERED THROUGH IC MEANS.

ʏᴏᴜ ᴇxᴘᴇᴄᴛᴇᴅ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʟᴇꜱꜱ?

Karakura has a history of ‘Zen Influence’, specifically from the Kamakura period onward.

Onesung leans on that heritage heavily. Their members all see themselves as Custodians of the island’s forgotten Dharma, ‘on the spiritual path’, ostensibly the Noble Eightfold Path being what guides the group’s actions. However, their interpretation of the path’s elements, particularly “Right Intention/Resolve” and “Right Action” isn’t articulated clearly to the public for sensible legal reasons...

[CONSTITUTION OF KARAKURA] - Article 3.
Everyone in Karakura will be treated & respected as Individuals. They will maintain their right to life, happiness and whatever they see fit will not be infringed upon, unless they interfere with public welfare & safety as these are our primary concerns.

Karakura is known for cliques, groups of people who harbor information. Onesung is extremely preoccupied with spiritual phenomena, viewing ALL instances of supernatural/spiritual activity as potential insight that could help others on the path to enlightenment. Karakura's history is, well... replete with so much folklore and historical discussion of such phenomena that it's no shock people would come to take an interest in it.

Yet, though Karakura's textbooks are replete with references... in practice, spiritual encounters are not only reportedly rare but also often extremely personalized. Indeed, powerful, influential, or simply ‘cagey’ groups on the island, or select individuals, often conceal information out of fear that spreading it may be dangerous or otherwise taboo. Other groups have a rather impressive assortment of rules regulating such matters, while some of Karakura’s residents scoff at the idea of supernatural phenomena of any kind.

Onesung does not have time for such terrestrial taboos and views with IMMENSE suspicion any sentient being within the prefecture who would deign to withhold 'spiritual truths' (defined rather liberally) from the public. Such people are fair game. All action against them is permitted should they adamantly refuse to share spiritual insights freely for the benefit of others.

No arsenal of laws, nor army of mainland baffoons, clerics, policemen, or judges shall be permitted to maintain such secrecy against the good sense and just feeling inherent in those properly following the path.

To this end, all endeavors to obtain spiritual insight are encouraged, particularly methods that go beyond simply seizing by force, which is often completely unproductive. Coaxing it out, using gentle, well-intentioned lies, full psychological operations, all manner of esoteric, even ‘frowned upon’ methods to, ultimately, achieve rapid spiritual realizations are permitted.

WHO WOULD JOIN?

The better question, from the group's perspective:
Who in their right mind would stand in the way of such a noble path of inquiry?

Regardless of one’s personality, provided their commitment to rapid spiritual realizations and broader egalitarian research into the ‘spiritual heritage’ of Karakura is true, they are likely to be of use to the group.

Onesung doesn’t really prohibit ‘forbidden’ or so-called ‘dangerous’ spiritual practices. In reality, so they claim, powerful methods that require preparation are often cast aside by the town's moral entrepreneurs as ‘dangerous’, when this is often far from true, and even things typically labeled “impure” can often be transformed into part of the path when approached with the correct understanding of emptiness and compassion. With the help of other qualified gurus within Onesung, such methods can be safely transmitted only after initiation and under guidance. Indeed, without proper training, such practices could easily become mere indulgence, rather than transformation.

One is likely to excel within the sect if they:

  • Have an easy time interacting with and befriending others
  • Are interested in spiritual development
  • Appreciate the incredibly central role of guru devotion within the sect
  • Possess knowledge (to any degree) of Karakura’s history and folklore, or otherwise have an easy time ‘picking up’ on such topics.
  • Can communicate information effectively, not just ‘conveying’ information, but encouraging dialogue.
  • Would enjoy spreading publications that nobody in Karakura News would dream of writing
  • Have any familiarity with organized crime, interactions with BMD, and use IKIGAI (or at least know how to/willing to learn)
  • Can masterfully manipulate narratives. Individuals who can draw on their Onrain presence are especially desired.
  • Have an understanding of the laws within Karakura and are willing to exploit them to further the spiritual revolution.

HOW ON EARTH DO THEY RECRUIT?
Total mystery, honestly. Yeah, literally nobody knows.
It is actually quite scary to think these people could be literally anywhere in Karakura, and we wouldn't know!? Wow.
Truly, it is a shame. Nobody has even the smallest idea, so you probably shouldn't even bother looking.
In fact, the whole 'catastraphe in the community' rubbish is probably just hyperbole at best, and at worst: mass hysteria.

"Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond, awakening, so be it"

We ourselves must strive. The Tathāgatas of 1989 only show the way. -███████, October 2025

Unique among criminal enterprises in Karakura, the ultimate aspiration of Onesung is ███████. Crime is, frankly, an afterthought/incidental to their endeavors, with most criminals, they find, breaking the law purely to sate the ego. This accomplishes nothing. It only results in the accumulation of bad karma; it evinces a lack of skillful means; and it causes suffering for all involved.

An accelerated path towards ███████ for all involved, potentially within this lifetime, is what the group offers. Spiritual practice is promoted, and insights gained, ‘for the benefit of all sentient beings’. Unfortunately, a great many things done by the collective in the name of this compassionate endeavor are often seen as highly suspect to the uninitiated. Thus, secrecy is necessitated.

Virtually all spiritual phenomena are of interest to the group, and the avenues of research seem to be never-ending. Indeed, the group, though small, has faced all manner of obstacles. Yet… great strides have been made by those willing to pursue answers, no matter the cost!
