BACKSTORY
Ito Tachibanahara, aka Gao Yue at birth, in Yunnan Province, China, was born a bit strange. She weighed an exact amount of 11.4 pounds, a startling but ultimately prophetic start. Her birth parents were poor rural farmers, who toiled endlessly on the hillside terraces of rural Yunnan. But the crops kept on failing each year and each harvest yielding less than the last, so they hesitantly made the tearful decision to put her up for adoption at the age of five, hoping that somewhere she might have a better life.
As a result of her adoption by the strict but kind Japanese businessman Ichigo Tachibanahara of Osaka, Gao Yue has been renamed and transformed into Ito Tachibanahara. At a young age, she was instilled with virtues of hard work, humility, and unobtrusive determination by a traditional family. Through an escalator program, she attended the Osaka Sacred Mother Academy, an all-female Catholic school; she stayed within the same small, close-knit school system until graduation.
Ito's unusual height was apparent by the time she was in grade school. She stood nearly 5'2" at age 8, well above her peers. She grew to more than 6'6" by the time she was in high school, eventually growing to a full 7 feet tall by age 19. Although her height was a striking thing, it was a double-edged blade.
She was loved from a distance; her height made her look strong and confident, and she was often hired as a reference point for school events or asked to reach high things. Her unusual appearance drew many to her, and she became a quiet kind of popular. It was a loner on the other hand. She never fit into school uniforms, her desks were too small, and she was regularly excluded from class activities like sport or dance clubs because her presence "disturbed the balance." People made a habit of putting ideas on her, classing her as intimidating, manly, or "too much" without ever properly getting to know her.
Rather than hanging out in clubs, Ito spent her after-school time helping her adoptive father with his business, a small but steady antique shop that sold old Japanese ceramics and scrolls. Her best friends were her father Ichigo and his twin brother Izuku. Izuku, being the more unconventional of the two, taught her to read ancient texts and find the beauty of imperfection values that settled her in spite of the way the world constantly left her feeling like a fish out of water.
As she matured, Ito learned how to walk with dignity despite the staring, learning to be proud of her peculiarity. Her back may have ached slightly harder than others', but she was never able to discover shoes that fit well, yet her strength was not merely physical, but also emotional. She became a person of quiet intensity: someone who doesn't say much, but hears carefully, and acts with unwavering serenity.
And now Ito moves through the world not just as taller than everyone else but as one who has learned to live above expectation, between spheres, and through pain. It's a journey of identity, unspoken strength, and learning where she fits in spaces never intended for someone like her.
